Our September 2017 adventure to Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula became one of the most unforgettable wildlife experiences we’ve ever shared. Cindy, Richard, and I had a private whale-watching tour, with our boat the only one on the water that day. After searching the coastline without success, our captain made one final stop—and there they were. Magnificent humpback whales appeared just when we thought our luck had run out. We watched in amazement as enormous adults repeatedly breached beside the boat, with a playful calf swimming nearby. The combination of pristine Pacific waters, the untouched beauty of Marino Ballena National Park, and the thrill of witnessing these gentle giants in their natural habitat made it a day we’ll never forget. It was a perfect reminder that the greatest travel memories often come when you keep searching just a little longer.
