Our 2001 adventure began along Spain’s beautiful Costa del Sol in Torremolinos before crossing the Mediterranean to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta and entering the fascinating world of Morocco. It was a journey unlike any we had experienced, where ancient traditions, bustling marketplaces, and centuries of craftsmanship surrounded us at every turn.

In Fez, we wandered through one of the world’s oldest medinas, watching artisans create colorful leather goods, intricate tile mosaics, hand-hammered metalwork, and beautifully woven rugs using techniques passed down for generations. Every narrow alley revealed another hidden workshop or vibrant market filled with unforgettable sights, sounds, and aromas.

Marrakesh offered an entirely different energy, especially in the famous Jemaa el-Fnaa square, where storytellers, musicians, food vendors, and entertainers transformed the plaza into a living spectacle from morning until late into the night. In Casablanca, we visited the magnificent Hassan II Mosque, whose stunning architecture and oceanfront setting made it one of the highlights of the journey.

Our travels concluded in Tangier, where we explored the winding streets of the historic medina and, like many visitors before us, found ourselves delightfully lost among its maze of narrow passageways. From Spain’s sunny coastline to Morocco’s imperial cities, colorful markets, and remarkable architecture, this trip introduced us to a rich blend of European and North African cultures that made for an unforgettable adventure.
