Our 2002 journey through Cambodia and Thailand began in Siem Reap, where we explored the extraordinary temples of Angkor. We stood before the iconic towers of Angkor Wat, walked among the massive stone faces of Angkor Thom, and wandered through Ta Prohm, where enormous tree roots wrapped around ancient walls and doorways. We also visited the floating villages and traveled through Cambodia’s rural countryside, which at the time felt rugged, remote, and far removed from modern tourism.

From Cambodia, we continued to Phuket, Thailand, where the pace shifted from ancient temples to tropical beaches and warm turquoise water. We relaxed on a secluded beach, went snorkeling, and took a memorable trip to Phi Phi Island. One of the most exciting experiences was traveling by sea canoe through narrow caves and into the hidden centers of limestone islands, surrounded by towering cliffs and calm lagoons.

The food throughout the trip was amazing, filled with fresh seafood, fragrant herbs, curries, and unforgettable Thai flavors. We also enjoyed a spectacular Thai drag show presented on a huge stage, with elaborate costumes, dramatic lighting, and performers appearing every bit as glamorous as international celebrities.

From the ancient wonders of Angkor to the beaches, caves, and nightlife of southern Thailand, this journey brought together history, adventure, beautiful scenery, remarkable food, and unforgettable entertainment.

Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Our journey through Cambodia centered around Siem Reap, a vibrant town with lively night markets, Tiger beer on tap, and the scent of fish sauce wafting from street food stalls. From here, we explored the astonishing ancient temples of Angkor—a sprawling, sacred complex that once formed the heart of the Khmer Empire. Angkor Wat, the crown jewel, awed us with its grand towers and intricate carvings, including the...

Siem Reap

Siem Reap, Cambodia

Crossing into Cambodia from Bangkok, we arrived in Siem Reap during a time when tourism was still light. The town had a quiet energy — small cafés, dusty roads, and a sense of deep, complex history hanging in the air. We woke well before dawn to experience Angkor Wat in the pre-sunrise stillness. Watching the silhouette of the ancient spires emerge against the pink-orange sky was unforgettable — a spiritual and...

Ta Prohm

Ta Prohm, Cambodia

We visited Ta Prohm under the heavy cloak of heat and humidity, the air thick and still as we stepped into another world. Unlike the other wats we explored around Angkor, Ta Prohm had not been tamed. Here, nature reigns. Massive trees towered above us, their roots cascading over ancient walls like flowing stone. Some grew straight out of the temple’s heart—through doorways, atop roofs, even bursting from holes...

Tonle Sap

Tonle Sap, Cambodia

From Siem Reap and the ancient temples of Angkor, we took a side journey to the remarkable Tonlé Sap—the pulsing, seasonal heart of Cambodia. As we left the carved stone serenity of the wats behind, the road gave way to rural life: raised homes, dusty roads, and finally, the edge of water. We boarded a boat and glided through a floating village—a world entirely afloat. Boat-houses gently rocked in the current...

Bangkok

Bangkok, Thailand

We landed in Bangkok at night, and the first impression was unforgettable. The air was smoky, hazy from burning rice fields, mixing with the heavy, humid heat of Southeast Asia. As we rode into the city, the flicker of streetlights, back-alley turns, and neon-lit chaos had us quietly wondering: “What have we gotten ourselves into?” But then — arrival. Our hotel sat beside the Chao Phraya River, and it was...

PhiPhi Island

PhiPhi Island, Thailand

We left Phuket early in the morning by high-speed boat, skimming over the sparkling Andaman Sea toward the famous Phi Phi Islands. As we approached, the limestone cliffs came into view, rising dramatically from the turquoise water. We stopped just offshore, diving in for a swim in the warm, impossibly clear sea. Phi Phi has become iconic—its beauty drawing visitors from around the world—but even paradise needs a...

Phuket

Phuket, Thailand

We stayed at a hillside resort overlooking Patong Beach—its curve of golden sand met the Andaman Sea like a postcard brought to life. From our balcony, the waves shimmered in the afternoon sun, the energy of the beach always pulsing below us, but softened by the elevation and breeze. One morning, we arranged a private boat to a hidden cove—accessible only by sea. The journey felt cinematic, skipping across...
