Bellingrath Gardens and Home — October 2018

In October 2018, we visited Bellingrath Gardens and Home, a magnificent historic estate in Theodore, Alabama, about 20 miles south of downtown Mobile. The gardens lie along the peaceful Fowl River near Mobile Bay, where the lush Gulf Coast landscape provides a beautiful setting for formal gardens, quiet pools, fountains and broad lawns. The estate’s address is 12401 Bellingrath Gardens Road, Theodore, Alabama.

Our autumn visit offered a chance to wander through the estate’s brick pathways beneath mature live oaks and Spanish moss. The 65 acres of cultivated gardens include the formal rose garden, terraces, reflecting pools, Mirror Lake, fountains, a conservatory and carefully planned displays that provide color throughout the year. October brought the softer light and comfortable temperatures of fall, along with seasonal plantings and the beginning of the garden’s celebrated autumn displays.

The property began not as a grand garden but as a rustic fishing retreat. In 1917, Mobile businessman Walter Duncan Bellingrath, one of the Southeast’s early Coca-Cola bottlers, purchased riverfront land on the former site of a sawmill. He called the retreat Belle Camp and used it as a place to escape the demands of his growing business.

The transformation of Belle Camp was largely inspired by Walter’s wife, Bessie Mae Morse Bellingrath, who had a deep love of flowers and gardening. She began planting azaleas and developing the property into a landscaped estate. Walter later credited Bessie’s imagination and gardening talent as the creative force behind what became Bellingrath Gardens.

The gardens first opened to the public on April 7, 1932, after Walter placed a newspaper advertisement inviting local residents to see the spring flowers free of charge. The response was so overwhelming that the Bellingraths continued welcoming visitors, eventually opening the gardens throughout the year in 1934.

In 1935, the couple completed their 15-room, approximately 10,500-square-foot home overlooking the Fowl River. Designed by prominent Mobile architect George B. Rogers, the house was constructed using handmade brick and architectural materials salvaged from historic buildings in Mobile. Today, the home remains furnished with the Bellingraths’ antiques, artwork and personal possessions, preserving the atmosphere of an elegant Gulf Coast residence.

Walter Bellingrath arranged for the estate to be preserved through the Bellingrath Morse Foundation. Following his death in 1955, the home was opened as a museum, ensuring that the gardens and residence would remain available for future generations. What began as a quiet fishing camp ultimately became one of the South’s best-known garden estates—a lasting monument to Walter and Bessie Bellingrath and their shared love of beauty, hospitality and the Alabama Gulf Coast.
